When Kool & the Gang Needed It There, A1 Xpress Made the Trip
A celebrated music legend, a Cleveland stage, and the logistics team who handled it all.
The Client
Kool & the Gang
Kool & the Gang has been one of the most recognized names in American music for more than five decades. Between touring, appearances, and private events, the band operates on schedules where timing isn’t flexible, and where last-minute logistics can make or break a show.
A1 Xpress has served as their go-to courier and delivery partner for years, handling everything from errand runs to event freight.
The Need
For Kool & the Gang’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and afterparty at the House of Blues in Cleveland, Ohio, the band needed a partner who could handle multiple jobs under a single call: pick up custom event décor from a New Jersey vendor, transport it safely over 500 miles, and have it on-site in time for setup.
The décor in question was a set of large topiary animals, oversized floral sculptures inspired by one of the band’s album covers, and made from silk flowers and custom frames. These items were fragile by nature, unwieldy by design, and irreplaceable on this timeline.
This was an important moment for the band. When it came to making sure everything was perfect for the celebration, A1 Xpress was the only call we made.

How A1 Xpress Handled It
Our team picked up the topiaries from the New Jersey vendor and loaded them into the truck using A1 Xpress’s electric pallet jacks, which allowed the oversized bases to be moved without manual lifting that could damage the silk flowers. The sculptures were strapped to the truck’s walls to keep them stable and upright for the entire run to Cleveland.
On arrival at the House of Blues, our team didn’t hand off the freight and leave. We stayed on-site and used the pallet jacks to maneuver the topiaries into position on the floor. The whole job was planned roughly a month out, coordinated directly with the band’s team, with A1 Xpress handling logistics from pickup through final placement.
Everything arrived exactly as it should have. That’s what we’ve come to expect from them, and they delivered.

The Outcome
For Kool & the Gang’s Hall of Fame afterparty, the topiaries arrived intact, setup was done on time, and the event went exactly as planned.
The Ongoing Relationship
A1 Xpress handles regular work for Kool & the Gang, not just major events. Rush pickups from Manhattan for last-minute show equipment, catering runs from Princeton-area restaurants, and errand coordination between appearances are all part of the ongoing work. The calls come in regularly, and A1 XPress handles them.
It’s the kind of relationship that works because the band’s team doesn’t have to explain the urgency every time. A1 Xpress already knows.
Event Logistics: Why the Freight Side Is Harder Than It Looks
Concerts, ceremonies, and high-profile events run on fixed timelines with no built-in flexibility. For event producers and talent teams, freight can unravel everything else on the schedule if it isn’t handled precisely.
The specific freight challenges in this space come from a few places.
- Custom or one-of-a-kind items, like branded décor, staging props, or specialty equipment, often can’t be replaced if something goes wrong in transit.
- Delivery windows are tied directly to setup crews, so a delayed shipment doesn’t just mean a late arrival; it means idle labor and a compressed installation timeline.
- Venues, particularly theaters, clubs, and arena spaces, have their own load-in rules, elevator restrictions, and dock access schedules that a driver unfamiliar with the building won’t know until they’re already there.
For carriers, event work requires the ability to stay on-site and see the job through. Dropping freight at a loading dock is one thing. Still, coordinating with a venue crew, using the right equipment to get pieces into position, and knowing when to follow the production schedule and when to call an audible, that’s a different request entirely and it’s one that’s best managed by experienced logistics professionals.
A1 Xpress has handled event and entertainment freight for decades. The delivery doesn’t end at the dock. Getting fragile, custom, or time-critical items into position at a venue is part of the job.
